About Arny

Stuttgart, Germany, 1904: the type foundry of Otto Weisert releases “Arnold Böcklin”, a display typeface capitalizing on the style du jour, Art Nouveau (or Jugendstil in Germany). It makes little cultural impact and is a commercial flop.

A few decades later during the ‘60s–‘70s Art Nouveau revival craze, Böcklin is rediscovered in an old specimen book and becomes an instant hit. It is re-released multiple times, first as photo-type, then again during the early era of digital fonts.

Bôcklin remains popular and is still the Art Nouveau font archetype. But despite its appeal, there is a lot about Böcklin that could be better. That’s why I made Arny.

Arny has been redesigned from the ground up, weighing every detail and vastly improving on original drawings. It contains a range of weights, features and language support, all sorely lacking in older versions.

Arny is the fourth generation of Arnold Böcklin, and in my biased opinion, the best by far. Because of Arny’s balanced texture, refined details, and added flexibility, its iconic spirit can shine all the brighter.
